IDO Strengthens Global Presence: Fiona Johnson Reflects on Inspiring Asia Tour

The International Dance Organization (IDO) proudly presents an exclusive interview with its Senior Vice President, Fiona Johnson, following her recent and highly successful Asia tour covering Korea and Japan.

The visit marked an important step in IDO’s long-term vision to expand its global presence and strengthen cultural and professional ties across Asia—one of the fastest-growing regions in the world of dance.

During her trip, Ms. Johnson held meetings with government officials, cultural representatives, and dance associations, while also participating in high-profile events such as Seoul Fashion Week and visiting key locations including Yeosu, Busan, and Tokyo.

A major highlight of the tour was her appointment as Advisor for International Cooperation at the Korea International Dance Committee (KIDC)—a role that symbolizes trust, recognition, and a shared commitment to developing the dance community in Korea and beyond.

In this in-depth conversation, Fiona Johnson opens up about her experiences, her vision for IDO’s future in Asia, and the significance of upcoming projects such as the IDO Asian Championships in Yeosu. Her reflections capture not only the warm hospitality and enthusiasm of her hosts but also the tremendous potential for building a strong and united IDO presence across the continent.

Interview with Fiona Johnson, IDO Senior Vice President

Fiona, you’ve just returned from your Asia tour. How would you describe the overall experience?

The Asia region is new for me, and on this trip, my focus was on Korea and Japan. It was filled with beautiful memories of hospitality, productive business meetings, and unforgettable experiences of discovering cities like Seoul, Incheon, Yeosu, Busan, and Tokyo. It felt like home because everyone went out of their way to accommodate me and promote IDO as if it were their own. I can speak only for Korea and Japan, but overall, the experience was truly enriching.

Why is Asia such an important region for the future of IDO?

Asia is a crucial region for the future of IDO because it represents a vast market with incredible talent in dance. The organization of dance in Asia is somewhat different from Europe, but it aligns well with the ideas and goals of IDO. Our aim is to build a stable IDO family across Asia by connecting with individuals and organizations that share our spirit and passion for dance. We want to establish a strong presence, organize competitions, and see the IDO flag flying proudly on this continent.

What were the key highlights of your visit to Korea?

The highlights of my visit to Korea were truly exceptional and deeply meaningful. Never before has an IDO presentation been as special and impactful as the one organized by KIDC and Mr. Min Oh during Seoul Fashion Week. We showcased and promoted IDO in front of distinguished guests, including the 11 wives of international ambassadors based in Seoul and members of the American Women’s Club. It was a night to remember—truly a landmark moment for IDO and a new level of recognition.

Additionally, the meetings with government officials and the visit to the Yeosu Expo Convention Center reinforced my belief that Korea is a solid partner for IDO’s future. Of course, the success of large-scale events in Asia greatly depends on the support of the city, region, and government, and I am confident we can build this strong foundation together.

My trip to Japan was equally inspiring, opening new perspectives and introducing me to dance associations with over 40 years of experience in performing arts—real gems. We are now in the process of negotiations to establish cooperation that could significantly enrich IDO’s presence and activities in Japan.

Can you tell us more about your appointment as Advisor for International Cooperation at KIDC?

My appointment as Advisor for International Cooperation at KIDC is an important milestone and a great honor. Being recognized and included among the most influential and legendary figures of the Korean entertainment industry – legends/icons of the musical scene, movie actors, top TV producers, and pioneers of Korean fashion - reflects the importance of this role. In this capacity, I am entrusted with the vital mission to strategically promote IDO and foster the development of dance competitions throughout Korea. This position not only elevates IDO’s visibility in Korea but also signifies a major step towards strengthening international cultural exchange and collaboration in the region.

How do you see the upcoming IDO Asian Championship in Yeosu contributing to IDO’s growth in the region?

The upcoming IDO Asian Championship in Yeosu is a critical opportunity for the growth and expansion of IDO in the region. It will serve as a powerful platform to showcase Korea’s vibrant dance talent, foster stronger connections among Asian countries, and raise awareness of IDO’s mission and values. By hosting such a prominent event in Yeosu, we will not only elevate the profile of dance competitions but also pave the way for increased participation, collaboration, and long-term development of IDO’s presence across Asia.

While IDO is well known and established in Europe, the distance makes it challenging for Asian dancers to participate regularly. It is both wise and strategically important to establish a strong base in Asia, with local members who understand the specific needs of the region and can address them directly. Of course, initial steps should be taken with the support and guidance of the IDO office, but ultimately, the development and success of a regional presence will benefit everyone—creating more opportunities, fostering local talent, and strengthening IDO’s global community.

What is your vision for IDO in Asia in the next 5–10 years?

I believe the more appropriate question is: what does IDO envision for Asia in the next 5–10 years? I sincerely hope that IDO recognizes the tremendous potential in the region, just as I do, following the vision of my mentor, Michael Wendt. Our focus should begin with identifying genuine organizations, establishing strong connections with existing event organizers, and promoting knowledge exchange projects. There’s so much we can achieve through collaboration and mutual support. Of course, it's best to keep some plans under wraps for now—after all, strategic discretion is key to success, don’t you agree? 😊

With IDO’s 45th anniversary coming in 2026, how do you see Asia playing a role in this milestone celebration?

As IDO’s 45th anniversary approaches in 2026, I believe the Asia Championships would play an important role. The region’s growing talent, vibrant dance community, and increasing engagement with IDO are essential parts of our journey together. I see Asia as a key driver in showcasing the global diversity and unity that IDO stands for. We should organize special events, performances, and initiatives that highlight Asian dance excellence, promote cultural exchange, and honor the region’s contributions to IDO’s legacy. Celebrating together in Asia will not only strengthen our regional presence but also reinforce IDO’s global family, paving the way for even greater achievements in the future.

What message would you like to share with dancers and organizers in Asia who are looking forward to joining the IDO family?

Being part of the IDO worldwide family is truly something special. To me, IDO is like a beautiful, colorful bird, filled with the freedom of dance—expressing movement in endless, ever-changing forms. It never stays the same, always experimenting, exploring, and flying across continents to live its life with purpose, happiness, and pride. This bird’s heartbeat is the rhythm of dance itself—a powerful, resilient phoenix. My favorite bird and a symbol of the limitless possibilities and inspiring spirit that come with joining the IDO family. I welcome all dancers and organizers in Asia to become part of this vibrant journey of creativity, unity, and cultural exchange.
