IDO Signs Joint Call to Protect and Prioritize Sport in the Future EU Budget

The International Dance Organization (IDO) proudly joins a coalition of key European stakeholders in signing a joint statement calling on EU policymakers to protect and prioritize sport and physical activity within the upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) beyond 2027.

As geopolitical challenges and defense spending reshape budgetary priorities, IDO and fellow signatories express deep concern over the potential reduction of EU investment in sport—an essential pillar of public health, economic development, social inclusion, and European values.

Sport is Essential to Europe’s Resilience

The joint statement outlines four key arguments why sport must remain a strategic investment for the EU:

1. Healthier Citizens:
Physical inactivity costs European healthcare systems an estimated €80 billion annually. Regular physical activity reduces the risk of major non-communicable diseases by up to 30%, and has a powerful impact on mental health, lowering depression and anxiety by up to 30%. Any cut to sport funding would undermine the EU’s commitment to preventive healthcare and recovery efforts through the EU4Health program.

2. Economic Growth and Innovation:
The sport sector represents 2.12% of the EU’s GDP and employs more than 5.6 million people. Every €1 invested in sport generates a €5 return in wider social and economic benefits. The sector also fosters digital innovation and sustainability. Undermining this engine of growth would negatively impact local economies and small businesses across Europe.

3. Social Inclusion and European Unity:
Sport plays a vital role in youth development, inclusion of refugees, people with disabilities, and marginalized communities. It fosters European identity and values such as equality, fair play, and democracy. Erasmus+ Sport and similar programs empower communities and promote cohesion—particularly at the grassroots level.

4. Soft Power and Global Influence:
The European Sport Model is globally recognized for promoting cooperation, stability, and diplomacy. Investment in sport contributes to social stability and post-crisis recovery, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sustaining this momentum is crucial for Europe’s internal unity and external influence.

A Unified Call to Action

Together with fellow organizations, IDO calls on EU policymakers to:

  1. Increase EU investment in sport and physical activity in the next MFF.

  2. Protect and expand Erasmus+ Sport, supporting youth, mobility, and innovation.

  3. Integrate sport into EU4Health strategies to prevent chronic disease and improve mental health.

  4. Support sport infrastructure and innovation through EU cohesion policy.

  5. Recognize sport as a strategic sector, ensuring protection for sport-related SMEs and job creation initiatives.

A Message from IDO

“Sport is not a luxury—it is a necessity. It is a driver of health, growth, and unity in Europe. As one of the signatories of this important joint statement, IDO strongly believes that dance and physical activity must remain central to the EU’s future strategy,” said Prof. Dr. Velibor Srdic, IDO President.

The full statement was released on May 5, 2025, in Brussels, and represents a united voice of Europe’s sport community. The IDO remains committed to advancing this message across its global network of dance organizations, athletes, and youth.

Sport is essential. Let’s keep Europe moving.
