IDO Show Dance Committee Meeting
The International Dance Organization (IDO) held its annual Show Dance Committee meeting online on January 31, 2025, with 26 delegates from 18 countries across three continents in attendance. The meeting covered key topics, including leadership transitions, future competitions, and the continued growth of Show Dance within IDO.
Honoring the Legacy of Ralf Josat
The meeting opened with a moment of silence in memory of Ralf Josat, the former Show Dance Committee Chairperson, who was deeply dedicated to the discipline. IDO Performing Arts Department Chairperson, Hana Svehlova, expressed condolences and acknowledged Ralf’s invaluable contributions to Show Dance over the years.
New Leadership for Show Dance
The IDO Presidium appointed Seamus Byrne (Gibraltar) as the new Chairperson of the Show Dance Committee. In his address, Seamus shared his deep connection to Show Dance, his past collaborations with Ralf Josat, and his vision for the future. He emphasized three key priorities:
- Education – Strengthening the training of coaches, choreographers, and judges, particularly in applying the 4-D system and ensuring Show Dance maintains its distinct artistic value.
- World Championships – Ensuring an annual World Show Dance Championship following the conclusion of Riesa’s tenure as the event host.
- Continental Expansion – Developing Show Dance events beyond Europe to promote its growth worldwide.

The committee approved the minutes from the previous meeting and discussed several critical topics:

2025 Show Dance Championships
- European Championships: Arnas, France (May 29 – June 1, 2025). Delegates from European countries were encouraged to support the event.
- World Championships: Originally planned for Serbia, but the contract was terminated due to unforeseen circumstances. Further details will be announced soon.

Potential Show Dance Expansion
Discussions included the idea of merging Show Dance with other IDO disciplines, such as Street Dance and Couple Dance. While some delegates supported this, others emphasized the unique identity of Show Dance and the need for discipline-specific competition conditions. -
Election of Committee Chairpersons in 2026
An overview of the upcoming election process was provided, as all Committee Chairpersons will complete their four-year terms in 2026.

Seamus Byrne reaffirmed his commitment to preserving and expanding Show Dance within IDO. He expressed confidence in the discipline’s future and looks forward to meeting all delegates at a dedicated forum during the 2025 IDO World Show Dance Championships.
