IDO Performing Arts Improvisation Committee Holds Annual Meeting

The International Dance Organization (IDO) successfully held the Performing Arts Improvisation (PAI) Committee Meeting 2026 on 4 February 2026, bringing together 21 delegates and guests from 16 countries in an online session chaired by Sylwana Patlaszynska, PAI Committee Chairperson.

The meeting focused on reviewing the development of Performing Arts Improvisation within IDO, evaluating the 2025 season, and defining strategic priorities for the year ahead.

During the Chairperson’s report, the committee highlighted 2025 as a milestone year, marking the first official IDO European and World Championships in Performing Arts Improvisation. The European Championships, held in Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Poland, welcomed 156 dancers from 15 countries, while the World Championships in Castellanza, Italy, gathered 131 dancers from 26 countries across multiple continents.

Key agenda points included the confirmation of PAI championship dates for 2026:

  • IDO European Performing Arts Improvisation Championships will take place from 25–28 September 2026 in Skopje, North Macedonia, alongside Jazz and Modern disciplines.

  • IDO World Performing Arts Improvisation Championships are scheduled for 2–8 December 2026 in Mikolajki, Poland, together with Show Dance.

A significant part of the meeting was dedicated to dancer safety and competition standards. The committee discussed a proposal from the Dancers’ Commission regarding minimum subfloor requirements beneath Marley Floors to reduce injury risks. Following discussions already held within the Show and Jazz Committees, a recommendation was presented supporting improved dance floor standards, linked to adjustments in start fees to assist organizers in meeting these requirements.

Additional topics included clarification of PAI costume rules, the introduction of new Improvisation Battle formats, and the announcement of an official IDO Performing Arts Improvisation Judges Seminar scheduled for 19 March 2026, open to judges and coaches.

The meeting concluded with confirmation that the next PAI forum and committee gathering will take place during the IDO World Championships in Mikolajki, as the committee continues its work on strengthening the artistic, educational, and organizational foundations of Performing Arts Improvisation within IDO.
