IDO Mourns the Passing of Ferry Polai (1944–2026)
The International Dance Organization (IDO) received the sad news that Ferry Polai has passed away at the age of 81.
Ferry Polai was one of Austria’s most respected figures in the dance world: a long-time leader within professional dance structures, a member of the World Dance Council (WDC) Board, and a key supporter of the development of IDO Couple Dances. Through his vision, dedication, and organizational work, he helped shape an important chapter in international couple dance history.
A builder of Couple Dance within IDO
Within the IDO community, Ferry Polai is closely associated with a strong period of growth for Couple Dances. He contributed not only through governance and expertise, but also by organizing high-level competitions in Austria that set new standards for event quality, structure, and atmosphere.
His legendary World Championships in Couple Dance held in Seefeld (2005–2007) and Nauders (2008) became milestones in IDO history and remain fondly remembered by dancers, coaches, judges, and officials from around the world.
A family dance school that shaped generations
Together with his wife Waltraud, Ferry Polai founded Tanzschule Polai in 1978 in Innsbruck. Later, their daughter Julia Polai continued the family tradition, leading the school into a new generation.
As a trainer, teacher, and organizer, Ferry inspired countless dancers and educators. His ideas were often ahead of their time, driven by passion, creativity, and a deep love for dance. His energy, humor, and openness made him not only a respected professional, but also a cherished colleague and friend.
A respected international figure
Beyond IDO, Ferry Polai was also active within the wider international dance community through his work with the World Dance Council, where he contributed to the development of professional and social dance worldwide.
IDO Statement
“Ferry Polai was the kind of person who didn’t just talk about dance—he built things that helped dancers meet, compete, learn, and grow. Many people in IDO Couple Dance will remember him for his drive, his open spirit, and the good moments we shared together. Our thoughts are with his wife Waltraud, his daughter Julia, and the entire Polai family.”
The International Dance Organization extends its sincere condolences to the Polai family, their friends, and the entire Austrian and international dance community.
Ferry Polai’s legacy will live on through the generations of dancers he inspired and the dance world he helped shape.
