Every dancer matters. Every dancer deserves respect.

The International Dance Organization (IDO) is pleased to announce the launch of RESPECT IN MOTION, a new quarterly safeguarding bulletin dedicated to promoting respect, equality, inclusion and wellbeing throughout the international dance community.

Developed by the IDO Safeguarding Team, this new publication represents another step in IDO's commitment to creating a safe, supportive and respectful environment for dancers, coaches, teachers, officials and everyone involved in dance.

First Edition: Recognising Discrimination

The inaugural edition, published in October 2026, focuses on one of the most significant challenges facing sport and performing arts: discrimination and equal opportunities.

Through educational information, practical examples and real-life experiences, the bulletin explores different forms of discrimination, including racial, gender, disability-related and religious discrimination, together with discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

The publication also highlights how discrimination can affect access to dance education, training, competitions, performance opportunities and leadership positions.

Respect Is a Daily Practice

Beyond raising awareness, RESPECT IN MOTION encourages every member of the dance community to take action.

The first edition introduces three essential principles:

PREVENTION – Build a Culture of Respect

Promote fairness, challenge stereotypes and create an environment where every dancer feels welcome and valued.

SUPPORT – Listen, Believe, Stand Together

Take concerns seriously, listen without judgement and support individuals who experience discrimination or harmful behaviour.

REPORTING – Speak Up, Take Action

Encourage responsible reporting, protect privacy and help create a safer environment for everyone.

A Shared Responsibility Across the Dance Community

With members and dancers from countries across the world, IDO recognises the importance of education, awareness and shared responsibility in promoting safeguarding.

RESPECT IN MOTION will serve as a regular educational resource, sharing information and practical guidance to help national dance organisations, dance schools, coaches, officials and dancers recognise harmful behaviour and promote positive change.

The bulletin also introduces the RESPECT IN MOTION Pledge, inviting everyone to make a personal commitment to dignity, equality, respect and responsible action.

Every Dancer Matters

Through this initiative, the IDO Safeguarding Team encourages the entire international dance community to recognise that safeguarding is a responsibility shared by everyone.

Respect begins with our everyday actions, the way we communicate, the way we treat others and the choices we make.

Together, we can create a safer, more inclusive dance community where everyone can thrive.

The first edition of RESPECT IN MOTION is now available for reading.
