IDO Couple Dance Department Shapes the Future at 2026 Annual Department Assembly
The International Dance Organization (IDO) convened its 2026 Annual Department Assembly for the Couple Dance Department on 12 May 2026. Held online, the meeting brought together representatives from IDO member organizations, committee leaders and officials to review the progress of the department and discuss strategic initiatives for the future.
The Assembly was chaired by Dr. Klaus Höllbacher, IDO Director of Couple Dances, who presented the department report and led discussions on a wide range of proposals designed to further strengthen the Couple Dance disciplines within IDO.
Reports were presented from the leaders of Latin Style, Latin Show, Caribbean Show, Argentine Tango, Discofox and Synchro Dance. The presentations provided valuable insights into participation trends, development opportunities and the challenges facing each discipline.
A major focus of the meeting was the review of eleven proposals covering both technical and structural topics. These included:
- A proposal to redefine Argentine Tango as a four-dance competition.
- Minimum wooden floor dimensions for Latin Style competitions.
- Expanding Caribbean Show to include a broader range of Caribbean dance influences.
- New regulations for Discofox, including the adoption of Leader and Follower terminology.
- Development of Standard Style and Standard Show as potential new disciplines.
- The possible use of LED screens as scenic elements in Latin Show productions.
These proposals reflect the department’s determination to keep pace with modern trends while maintaining the quality and integrity of IDO competitions.
An important announcement during the Assembly confirmed that the 2026 IDO European Couple Dance Championships will be hosted in Klagenfurt, Austria. The event is expected to welcome top dancers from across Europe and continue IDO’s tradition of presenting world-class championships in outstanding venues.
The Annual Department Assembly once again demonstrated the strong commitment of the IDO Couple Dance community to collaboration, innovation and the continued expansion of opportunities for dancers in all disciplines.
