IDO CELEBRATES 45 YEARS: FROM A VISION TO A GLOBAL DANCE FAMILY

Today, the International Dance Organization celebrates a remarkable milestone: 45 years of dance, history, friendship and international unity.

On 18 September 1981, a journey began that would connect generations of dancers across borders, cultures and continents. Forty-five years later, IDO celebrates not only the anniversary of an organization, but the extraordinary story of the people who built it.

The historical photographs and documents preserved in the IDO archives take us back to a very different dance world. Early statutes, original IDO emblems, printed championship programs, posters and photographs tell the story of an organization growing step by step, championship by championship and country by country.

They take us back to the first years of the 1980s, when Dance Show and Disco Dance were already bringing competitors together on international stages. They show World Championships and international events in Italy, France, Switzerland, Tunisia and other parts of Europe and beyond. By the end of the decade and into the 1990s, new disciplines, new countries and new generations were becoming part of the IDO story.

There were no social networks, livestreams or instant digital results. Championships were announced through printed posters and programs. Photographs became treasured memories. Results, documents and correspondence were preserved on paper.

But one thing visible throughout the archive has never changed:

the people.

Behind every historic photograph are dancers, coaches, adjudicators, organizers, officials and volunteers who believed that dance could bring people together.

From the pioneers who laid IDO's foundations to the generations of leaders who continued their work, each chapter contributed something to the organization we know today.

The photographs also remind us how much the world of competitive dance has evolved. Costumes changed. Music changed. Dance styles developed. Championships grew. Technology transformed the way competitions are organized and experienced.

And IDO evolved with them.

What began 45 years ago has developed into an international dance community bringing together national organizations and dancers from around the world and embracing a remarkable spectrum of dance disciplines.

Yet IDO's history cannot be measured only through championships, medals or titles.

It can be measured through human connections.

It is found in friendships created backstage, in dancers representing their countries for the first time, in coaches watching generations grow, in officials who dedicated decades of service, in organizers who transformed ideas into championships, and in the countless people who have carried IDO from one generation to another.

HONOURING THOSE WHO BUILT THE WAY

On its 45th birthday, the International Dance Organization pays special tribute to its founders, pioneers and former leaders, including those who are no longer with us.

Their photographs remain part of our archive. Their decisions remain part of our organization. Their passion remains part of every IDO stage.

Many people appearing in these historic images could not have imagined what IDO would become 20, 30 or 40 years later.

Today, thousands of young dancers stand on stages made possible by the work of those generations before them.

Remembering them is therefore not simply about looking into the past.

It is about understanding where we came from.

45 YEARS LATER, THE STORY CONTINUES

Today, IDO enters its 46th year carrying the same fundamental idea across a completely different world.

From printed programs to global digital communication.
From photographs kept in personal albums to moments shared instantly around the world.
From the pioneering championships of the 1980s to today's international IDO calendar.

The scale has changed.

The disciplines have evolved.

The generations have changed.

But the passion for dance remains.

Throughout this anniversary period, IDO will continue opening its archives and sharing photographs, documents, personalities and stories from across its history, while also looking toward the people who will write its next chapters.

Because the history of IDO does not belong to one person, one country or one generation.

It belongs to everyone who has been part of it.

To every dancer who stepped onto an IDO floor.

To every coach standing beside it.

To every adjudicator, official and volunteer.

To every organizer who opened the doors of an arena.

To every family that travelled thousands of kilometres to support a dancer's dream.

And to every person who has proudly said:

“I am part of IDO.”
