IDO Acrobatic Dance Committee Advances Development and Education for 2026

The International Dance Organization (IDO) Acrobatic Dance Committee convened online on 12 February 2026, bringing together 27 delegates and guests from 16 countries to review progress, strengthen educational pathways, and prepare for the continued growth of Acrobatic Dance within the IDO framework.

The meeting was chaired by Acrobatic Dance Chairperson Bonnie Dyer, with participation from representatives across Europe, Africa, and North America, as well as the organizer of the 2026 IDO World Acrobatic Championships.

A key focus of the session was the rapid development of Acrobatic Dance in IDO. Since its introduction, the discipline has expanded across multiple continents, with recent World Championships events held in Mexico, Poland, and Italy. The Committee highlighted the importance of clearly defining the discipline’s identity, emphasizing that acrobatic dance is distinct from acrobatic gymnastics and must maintain its dance-based character.

The Committee confirmed that the IDO World Acrobatic Championships 2026 will take place from 2–8 December in Mikołajki, Poland, within a major multi-discipline event including the IDO Gala and additional performing arts competitions. The venue will accommodate up to 2,000 participants and spectators, with full technical conditions suitable for acrobatic performance.

Educational development formed another central topic. Delegates strongly supported expanding structured seminars and workshops for both judges and teachers, building on the successful 2025 educational program. The Committee agreed that consistent education is essential to ensure quality judging standards and the safe, artistic evolution of the discipline.

Several rule-related discussions were also held, including evaluation structure (3D vs. 4D judging criteria), safety considerations in costumes, and maintaining clear boundaries between acrobatic dance and show-based choreography. Working groups were established to refine proposals and prepare recommendations for future rule updates.

The meeting concluded with confirmation of continued collaboration across member countries and a shared commitment to strengthening Acrobatic Dance globally within IDO.
