Historic First: IDO African Championship – Battle of the Giants Shines in South Africa!

Sun City, South Africa – A milestone was made in July 2025 as the International Dance Organization proudly celebrated the inaugural IDO African Championship – Battle of the Giants, hosted by SABOD at the legendary Sun City Resort.

Over 371 dancers, 38 studios, and 714 performances lit up the stage across six countries – South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Hungary, Poland, and Slovenia – uniting for five unforgettable days of international competition, cultural celebration, and powerful performances.

This event was not just a competition—it was a celebration of passion, dedication, and the bold spirit of African dance,” said the organizer. “To see the arena filled with joy, emotion, and determination was the true victory. Our dancers gave everything – their hearts, their energy, their souls – and that made this moment truly historic.”

IDO Senior Vice President Fiona Johnson, who served as official Supervisor, echoed the moment’s importance:
“This event marked a significant milestone in the development of dance across the continent. Every performance was a tribute to the rich diversity and dedication of the dancers. It was a labor of love and a celebration of culture and talent.”

The championship also welcomed esteemed IDO representatives and adjudicators including:

  • Fiona Johnson (IDO Senior Vice President, Supervisor)

  • Michal Gawron (IDO Scrutineer, Danceit.pl)

  • Sylwana Patłaszyńska (IDO Europe President)

  • Piotr Patłaszyński (Polish Dance Federation President)

  • Tichaona Chikara (Zimbabwe Guest Judge)

Together with IDO President Velibor Srdic’s ongoing support, the event was a remarkable display of global collaboration and commitment to developing dance across Africa.

For many African nations participating, the journey was not easy—but their resilience, pride, and unwavering love for dance stole the spotlight and inspired all. This championship gave African dancers the opportunity to compete with international talent, be judged by top professionals, and build lasting memories that will echo far beyond the stage.

As one chapter ends, a new one begins. The IDO African Championship has set a new standard, laying a strong foundation for future international events on the continent.

With immense thanks to Bev and Warren Wood, the SABOD team, volunteers, and the Sun City Resort—this historic event was not only a success—it was a promise of a amazing future.
