Edilio Pagano: Elevating Dance Education and Moderation in the IDO Community

Edilio Pagano, IDO Vice President, esteemed educator, and judge, shares insights on his work as Chairperson of the Education Committee and reflects on the success of the recently held 2nd Moderators Seminar on December 6th. With decades of experience in the dance world, Pagano remains dedicated to fostering growth and excellence across all facets of dance.

The Mission Behind the Education Committee

Pagano's journey in dance began at an early age, driven by a passion that evolved into teaching and judging. Now, as Chairperson of the Education Committee, his focus lies in empowering young dancers by instilling the value of continuous learning and discipline. “My experience has given me a vision to help young people grow and to teach them the value of study and sport,” he shares.

Highlights from the 2nd Moderators Seminar

The recently concluded IDO Moderators Examination Seminar aimed to train moderators to become the voices that guide competitions, bridging dancers, audiences, and organizers. “The quality of a competition is not only defined by the judges or supervisors but also by the moderators who engage the audience and support the athletes,” says Pagano.

Led by IDO President Michael Wendt, the seminar covered regulatory aspects, event presentation, and techniques to involve participants throughout a competition. It also included a rigorous evaluation process, ensuring moderators are equipped to maintain professionalism and keep events running seamlessly.

What Makes a Great Moderator?

Candidates were nominated by their national federations and demonstrated an understanding of IDO competition rules. Pagano highlights key attributes: “A great moderator must have a strong command of English, confidence with a microphone, and the ability to improvise under pressure.” Practical testing included tasks like opening ceremonies, announcing judges, and managing awards presentations.

The Moderator’s Impact on Competitions

Pagano emphasizes the pivotal role moderators play in ensuring smooth event flow and timeliness. “Moderators assist with athlete coordination, time management, and maintaining the prepared schedule. Their work ensures that competitions run without delays, benefiting everyone involved.”

A Career Rooted in Training and Growth

With over four decades in the dance world, Pagano finds training the most rewarding aspect of his career. “Sharing my experiences and solutions with the next generation is both stimulating and gratifying. It’s not about avoiding mistakes but learning not to repeat them.” His background as a dancer, teacher, and judge informs his approach, ensuring a balance that addresses the needs of all stakeholders in a competition.

A Message to the IDO Community

“Dancing is the most wonderful gift life has given us—never stop embracing it.”

As IDO continues to uphold the highest standards in dance, Pagano’s leadership in education and moderation serves as a cornerstone for the organization’s success, inspiring dancers and professionals worldwide.
